Quick Assembly Mini Work Steady:-

Slender spindles tend to flex away from the cutting pressure of a turning tool. This can make it difficult to cut cleanly without some form of restraint to hold the work in a consistently turning circle. One way of steadying the work is by curling the fingers and palm of the forward hand around it. Another is by using the mechanical "Steady". Most steadies for wood turning are supplied with three adjustable arms tipped with ball bearing assemblies - the idea being that these are an advance over a solid bearing surface. - Not so! Ball bearings must have internal clearance which results in their being able to float slightly in relationship with the surface they are steadying. The work is free to chatter against  the cutting action of the tool. ("Old fashioned" steadies were made from a 'V' block of hardwood behind the work and always worked well for their users. The

imagined problem of excessive friction turns out not to be a problem.) Another inhibiting factor in the use of the modern wood turning steady is that it is time consuming to set up - each arm having to be individually reset when the steady is moved.

The HDB "Mini-Steady" overcomes both of these drawbacks and costs far less to purchase. The attachment simply clamps to the tool rest wherever and whenever needed. Solid polished jaws bear on the upper and lower back of the work at 120° to each other. They are set positively and simultaneously against the work by a single clamp action and totally eliminate chatter. Moving the steady is simply a matter of slackening the jaw clamp, moving the tool rest (to which the steady is attached) and re-clamping the jaw plate. The whole sequence takes no more than a few seconds.

1" Ø Counterbore Drive Centre:-

A tool whose use is often not understood. A 5/16" hole is bored halfway through the length of the work using a long hole boring auger, the work reversed and the boring completed. The 5/16" Ø peg nose centres in the first (half length) hole to act as a conventional drive centre, then as a counterbore bit to drill a 1" Ø mortise for lamp stem joints. The join of the joint is usuallydisguised with a bead or flute in the design of the lamp stem.
