Marlin Lathe Shank System :

The smart investment, a real case of intelligent design offering a significantly better and more versatile option, at a lower cost than conventional one piece tooling.

So What is It?

The answer is simple. A wide range of Morse Taper Shanks with a wide choice of interchangeable screw-on Heads for the tiniest work right up to really big production turnings and much, much more.

Marlin Shank Specification:

Shanks are manufactured in durable '40' Carbon British Tool Steel in 1,2 & 3 Morse taper sizes to suit most lathes (chart below for size advice) and have a common threaded nose, plus a register to ensure good concentricity.

They come complete with a 5mm(3/16"+) diameter Stainless Steel Centre Pin which fits any Prong Drive Head from 12mm (1/2") dia. Through to the massive 45mm (1.3/4") size and are finger adjustable to whatever projection to suit individual preferences. They can easily be resharpened in situ, or replaced.

Extended Shanks are available for copy lathe applications, improved rear access working and internal support of deep vessels, etc. Available in 2MT or 3MT, these come with the standard Centre Pin plus a security Drawbar kit.

Marlin Prong Drive Head Specification:

MD425 Four Prong Head
 on a 2MT Shank

These range from a tiny 6mm (1/4") head up to a massive 45mm (1 Ύ") dia head for really large work, thus meeting virtually any driving requirement

Prong Drives are manufactured in hardened and tempered tool steel for greater strength so they retain their sharpness and therefore provide a more effective drive with a much longer working life than conventional woodturning centres.

MD425 – 25mm dia (1") 4 prong drive.
Applications: This is the size which is preferred by most turners for middle order spindle work to around 100mm (4") – 125mm (5")

MD422 – 22mm dia (7/8") 4 prong drive.
Applications: Generally used in the lower range of middle spindle turning to around 75mm (3"), but capable of more. Originally designed for the canny Australian market where it was recognised that many spindle projects tended to have a 1" (25mm) end and the slightly smaller size allowed easier end working, with less risk of a "prong prang" (collision) .

MD416 – 16mm (5/8") 4 prong drive.
Applications: Mostley used in the smaller spindle range up to about 45mm (1 Ύ") – 65mm (2 ½").

MD412 – 12mm dia (1/2") 4 prong drive
Applications: Small spindle up to about 25mm(1") – 40mm (1 ½").

MD406 – 6mm dia (1/4") 4 prong drive + 3mm Pin
Applications: very useful for really small work and near the limit, size wise, to maintain a good and effective prong driving.

MD409 9mm dia (3/8") 4 prong drive + 3mm Pin
Applications: Miniature fine spindle work, generally to about the 20mm (3/4") area.

MD222 – 22mm dia (7/8") 2 prong drive
Applications: Used when the end of the blank is not square to its axis and a 4 prong drive cannot be safely used.

MD445 – 45mm (1 Ύ") 4 prong drive.
When only something this powerful will do.
Applications: Very large work, particularly softwoods, or high power turning.

MORE OPTIONS:

MD426 – 25.4mm (1") Ψ Counterbore
Designed as the perfect driving partner to our Live Hollow Centre with 8mm (5/16") centre pin (inc with head) for deep hole boring work and capable of effective recess cutting when required thanks to being designed with both side and rear relief and, of course, hardened.

MD408 – Light Pull Drive
A great performer for this specialist task and a definite improvement in light pull working. This new 8.5mm (11/32") design features a stronger neck section, improved performance and a re-designed centre axle pin which is included with the Head. Simple to use, just drill a 3mm dia cord hole through the blank and this tool will cut the recess and provide the drive to complete the pull in one operation.

MD009 – 9mm dia (3/8") Ring Centre Head
Applications: Avoids splitting and provides a light drive with minimal end marking and useful slip drive characteristics. Also matches the Micro Live Centre to allow end reversal and drives small ball ended items.

MD016 – 16mm dia (5/8") Ring Centre Head
Applications: Like the smaller version above our unique anti-splitting internal angle ring provides good slip-drive characteristics and a neat end finish to your work. Also matches our "Hollow 32" deep hole Live Centre for accurate work reversal.

MD115 – M5(3/16") Screwchuck
Application: Fast and efficient first operation blank mount or single operation work, such as knobs, etc. Features a high performance replacable Riesser screw – even 100mm (4") bowl blanks are not a problem.

MD015 – Polishing Mop Pigtail Head Mount 15mm (5/8")
It's surprising what a lot of operations can be carried out with this tool… not to mention turning Cork!

MD040 – 40mm CONE:
Ideal for driving and supporting work such as fruit, balls or any form where the centre pin or prong marking would be undesirable.

MD045 – FACEPLATE:
Useful 45mm (1 Ύ") dia faceplate with 3 radial fixing holes. Provides the perfect means to easily produce your own driving and mounting forms; e.g. Large cones for fruit (much more amenable to work size and accessibility than a fixed metal cone), wooden jigs, for items such as salt spoons, and much more.

MD800 – COLLET CHUCK SET: A very effective solution for holding small work or tools (drills, burrs, mops, etc.)
Not to be confused with most small collets, this achieves a high level of accuracy thanks to matching alignment registers in the Body and Brass Cap. The unit comes complete with an 8 piece set of high strength glass filled polyamide collets covering the range from 0 to 6mm (1/4")

MD013 – DRILL CHUCK OR MOUNTED DRILL CHUCK:
A 1.5mm (1/16") to 13mm (1/2") capacity Rohm Chuck (the accurate real thing with a hardened gear ring, etc. Not the soft metal, registerless ROC look-a-like.

Also available ready mounted with locking screw on a Morse Taper Shank of your choice.
