     Accessories

Almost any accessory made for woodturning can be used in conjunction with the VB lathe. Some of the most useful are shown here:

Direct work lighting:

A workshop's ambient lighting will rarely provide ideal illumination during each of the successive stages of a wood-turning project. Adjustable worklamps are helpful in revealing what may otherwise be in shadow and can also play an important role in determining and achieving uniform wall thickness when shaping thin-walled vessels.

Additionally, many turners find that the softer light and absence of strobe effects provided by tungsten bulbs is less tiring to work with over long periods than fluorescent lighting on its own.

Provision is made for mounting two adjustable lamps on the VB headstock.

Counterbore Drive Centres:

These are designed to bore a concentric mortise in the end of a lamp stem so that it can be joined to a turned dowel of the same diameter on the next section of the assembly. The peg nose follows a pre-bored flex hole through the stem so that the mortise is always on the same axis as the hole and all subsequent shaping of the workpiece made with the drive centre in position will also be concentric.

We now supply our own Multistar Marlin Counterbore/Drive Centre for theVB. Shown here is the 1" Ø version mounted on a 3MT shank with a 5/16" Ø peg nose.

Hollow Tail Centres:

The simplest method of boring a long hole through the centreof a workpiece is by means of an auger fed through a hollow tailcentre. The auger gathers waste as the boring proceeds and has to be withdrawn frequently to clear itself. Generally, long holes are bored half way, the work reversed, and the boring completed from the other end.
Hollow tail centres have a sharp ring surrounding the centrepoint so that when the point is removed, the ring will support the work and allow passage for the long hole boring auger through its hollow centre.

We now supply the Multistar "Live Revolving" Hollow Tail Centre which has a removable long centre finder in place of the removable point.

Long Hole Boring Auger :

The removable point enables the centre to be located accurately so that the ring can make an indentation for itself in the work.

A specially extended auger is available for the VB to take account of the unusually long tailstock quill and still give a 30" boring depth.

Drill Chucks:

In hollowing out procedures, many turners find it useful to drill into the centre of the blank to a precise depth before removing the bulk of the waste. This gives an immediate indication as to the safe hollowing depth and provides a clear area for the hollowing tool to run into at the end of each cut. A drill chuck held in the tailstock is to hold a selected diameter of boring bit is an ideal way of pro-ducing such a depth gauge/clearance hole.
A drill chuck with a morse taper arbour can also be mounted in the headstock and used to hold accessories such as polishing mops, sanding drums or, of course, drill bits. In this application the work to be drilled is held and pushed onto the rotating drill by hand or by using the tailstock. It is also possible to construct a small, height-adjustable table for mounting in the toolrest holder so that work can be offered in a more controlled way for horizontal boring etc.

This chuck will hold tools with shank diameters up to 12mm

Morse Taper Adaptors:

The VB has No. 3 Morse Tapers in head and tailstocks so that heavy duty centres and fitments can be used. (An H.D. fitment will do the work of a lightweight equivalent but the converse is not true.) For less demanding applications, lightweight centres can be used in the VB

by means of a sleeve adaptor which effectively converts a No. 1 or 2  Morse Taper arbor to a No. 3.

"Lovell Original" Smocks:

D esigned especially for woodturners, this garment provides the perfect means of keeping comfortable, relatively dust and chip-free (on the inside at least!) and safe from the potential hazard of trailing clothing in a workshop environment.
Collar and cuffs are adjustable and the smock's two large pockets are at the rear to avoid collecting wood waste. As well as doing its job in a practical sense, it looks good!
If your chest measures 44" over the clothing you would normally wear in the workshop, order a 44" smock. If in doubt, always order a slightly larger size for a comfortable fit. Your smock will be delivered embroidered with the VB logo and your name.

Smocks are available in chest sizes from 38" to 58". (Logos for businesses and clubs can be embroidered to order.)
